Mountbatten Gandhi

This speech, delivered by Lord Mountbatten at the memorial service held on the 100th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, pays homage to the great Indian figure who, together with Nehru, Patel and Ali Jinnah, led India to independence but also to Partition into two nations, India and Pakistan on August 15, 1947. (Pakistan was in two parts, West and East Pakistan, East Pakistan later became an independent Bangladesh, in 1971).

Lord Mountbatten shows that although he and Gandhi could have been enemies, they instead developed a strong friendship and mutual esteem fostered by Gandhi’s wisdom and Mountbatten’s keen political awareness.
