Wangari Maathai Nobel Winner

Professor Wangari Muta Maathai (1940-2011) was the founder of the “Green Belt Movement”.
The first woman from East Africa to receive a doctorate, she was elected to the Kenyan parliament in 2002 with 98% of the vote, and subsequently named Assistant Minister for the Environment, Natural Resources and Wildlife. She is best-known internationally as the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, in 2004.
