This Mark Twain story is a parody of the Horatio Alger rags-to-riches myth, or how to become a millionaire through hard work and an exemplary life. Readers at the time would recognise the reference to Stephen Girard, an immigrant from Bordeaux who became the first American millionaire. Pupils will enjoy reading about this naive hero and discussing the reasons why he fails.
