Poetry Please

Whatever our origin or age, we are all able to recall some element of poetry or rhyme heard as a child, and are able to recite it by heart. According to Alan Maley and Alan Duff in The Inward Ear, poetry offers a number of unique advantages, most notably: universality, motivation, a means of playing with the language, memorability, rhythm and performance. It is these advantages which we should exploit by working on poetry in class.

In this worksheet we present three different activities, each of which deals with English word stress and allows pupils to experiment with writing and speaking the English language.
